The Story

A Summer Day on the Water

Lily and Sam got married this summer at The Lake House on Canandaigua, right on the lake, and the whole day just leaned into that setting instead of working around it.

Sam got ready out on the dock, straightening his cufflinks with the water sitting still behind him. Lily walked out to meet him for their first look, her dress catching the breeze off the lake, and the two of them just started laughing, the kind of laugh that happens once the nerves finally let go. The ceremony was right there on the lawn at the water's edge, chairs lined up facing a floral arch with the lake filling the whole background. Lily walked down with her parents on either side, and by the time she and Sam turned around as a married couple, everyone was already on their feet. The two of them took off running back down the aisle hand in hand.

The party moved into the Event Barn once the sun went down, string lights strung across the wooden beams and the windows still holding a little blue from the sky outside. Sam's groomsmen pulled him into a huddle on the lawn before dinner. Later that night, the whole room hoisted Lily and Sam up on chairs while the band kept playing, and nobody left the dance floor for the rest of the night.

"By the time they turned around as a married couple, everyone was already on their feet."

The Venue

The Lake House on Canandaigua, A Finger Lakes Wedding Venue

The Lake House on Canandaigua sits right on the shore of Canandaigua Lake, a short drive from Rochester. The resort is fairly new, built in 2021 on the site of the old Inn on Canandaigua Lake, and the ceremony lawn sits close enough to the water that the lake stays in frame for the whole thing.

For Lily and Sam that meant portraits on the dock before the ceremony, family photos on the lawn right after, and then the Event Barn taking over once it got dark, still lit up by the last of the evening outside the windows. The light out there changes constantly. Morning on the dock looks nothing like sunset on the lawn, and neither looks like the barn once the string lights take over.

The Film

Captured by Darren Young Films

Lily and Sam's highlight film was shot and edited by Darren Young Films. For this one, the water ended up doing a lot of the storytelling on its own, since almost every scene has the lake somewhere in it: on the dock during getting ready, behind the ceremony, out the barn windows once it got dark.

If you're getting married at The Lake House on Canandaigua, or anywhere else in the Finger Lakes, and want a film that actually looks like your day did, I'd love to hear about it.
